Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing is a popular on-the-job learning, career development, and leadership development intervention. Essentially, Job Shadowing involves working with another employee who might have a different job in hand, might have something to teach, or can help the person shadowing him or her to learn new aspects related to the job, organization, certain behaviors or competencies. Organizations have been using this as a very effective tool for learning.

Job shadowing simply consists of a day (or part of a day) spent observing a professional as he or she goes about his or her job. It is a great opportunity to learn more about a career and a chance to practice interacting with adults on a professional level.

Job Shadowing Tips

1- Confirm time and function of the job – shadowing location (school Administration Offices, the American or National Principals, The School Administrator, the School superintendent..etc)
2- Develop a list of questions you could ask job shadowing host/ mentor. You could also consider sending a list of questions you most wanted answered ahead of time, so your host can prepare answers.
3- Take a notepad, laptop or recorder to record your observations and insights.
4- Understand and use basic manners in case your job shadowing experience involves Managerial work or dealing with young kids.
5- Consider your career inspirations and be prepared to answer questions about your interests and goals.
6- Prepare for changes—things could happen to end the shadowing sooner than expected. If something like this happens, react positively, and ask about possibly rescheduling for a better time.
7- Strive to have a positive outlook and make the best of the shadowing experience. If you don't like the shadowing experience, avoid making it obvious and do your best to make it through smiling.
8- Make good first impressions. As you introduce yourself---or get introduced--- and make good eye contact.
9- Find common ground and attempt to establish a good rapport with your host.
10- Act professionally throughout the job shadowing experience, showing your enthusiasm and appreciation.
11- Listen and learn as much as possible during job shadowing.
12- Participate/ attend as many activities/meetings/events during the shadowing experience.
13- Thank each person you spend time with during the shadow--- and follow up with an emailed thank-you note after you've completed the shadow experience.
